    Newman Sestina

    The Newman Sestina is a standard unrhymed sestina where all the keywords are anagrams. The word I chose to use was triangle. My six end words are: triangle, integral, altering, relating, alerting, grainlet (two words grain, let combined). You'll notice I changed the last word in the beginning of each new stanza (after the first) to break the monotony of repetitiveness. I also changed an end word or two to fit the sentence structure better. Otherwise, I followed the form as best I could.

    Here's a link Tiel gave me called the anagram dictionary and this anagram generator could also help.

    Here's an example

    Noise of Up

    In the noise of up grows a grainlet,
    A visual chronicle of her integral
    Flesh. Without hesitation comes an altering.
    Branches of grafted vinegar and orange: alerting.
    Her senses do not beg forgiveness relating
    To this viscid, incomprehensible triangle.

    Amidst their sundered geometry
    A fresh pulp grows from an askew grainlet.
    She won't miswrite certain viduity without relating
    Their visceral convictions and integral
    Truths. She's their conduit adept to alerting
    Life's interruptions, an unmistaken altering.

    In the basin of yesterday's changing
    Her anger ascended to a sharp pointed triangle
    Skewing dusk, unfounded words. Alerting
    Her inner, uncoupled grainlet;
    Her heart to pain's integral
    Features. She can't begin relating.

    Her tongue articulates a dictionary's common
    Word threading it between her and this altered
    Facsimile. She wants to scour that integral
    Existence from her mind's triangle.
    In the noise of up grows a grainlet,
    A woman's intuition becoming alert.

    Winter has dried upon her skin cold, alerting.
    Extinct is a woman-child's naivety and relating.
    Sewn grass can't grow a new grainlet
    Its green landscape has become altered.
    Many shades dance beneath the tree's triangle
    But, it's the broken limb which looks integral.

    A callous word summarizes life's integral
    Path, making her follow those alerting
    Flags home, to her family's safe triangle.
    There's been an undeniable unity relating
    Their heart's against this altering-
    In the noise of up grows a grainlet.

    I didn't add a tercet at the end of this sestina because I feel adding one would take away from the poem itself. It's taken me almost two months to write this poem because of its sensitive nature. But, it does allow me to finally move forward.

    Bridget Jones's Diary

    movie Bridget Jones's Diary
    date 2001
    poem To Autumn
    author John Keats

    To Autumn by John Keats can be found in its entirety below. Words used in the movie are in bold. Comments welcome.

    To Autumn

    Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
    Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun,
    Conspiring with him how to load and bless
    With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
    To bend with apples the mossed cottage-trees,
    And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
    To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
    With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
    And still more, later flowers for the bees,
    Until they think warm days will never cease,
    For Summer has o'er-brimmed their clammy cells.

    Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store?
    Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find
    Thee sitting careless on a granary floor,
    Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind;
    Or on a half-reaped furrow sound asleep,
    Drowsed with the fume of poppies, while thy hook
    Spares the next swath and all its twinèd flowers;
    And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep
    Steady thy laden head across a brook;
    Or by a cider-press, with patient look,
    Thou watchest the last oozings hours by hours.

    Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they?
    Think not of them, thou hast thy music too -
    While barrèd clouds bloom the soft-dying day,
    And touch the stubble-plains with rosy hue:
    Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn
    Among the river sallows, borne aloft
    Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies;
    And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn;
    Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft
    The red-breast whistles from a garden-croft;
    And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.

    Before Sunrise

    movie Before Sunrise
    date 1995
    poems Delusion Angel
    As I Walked Out One Evening
    authors David Jewell
    W H Auden

    Delusion Angel by David Jewell and As I Walked Out One Evening by W H Auden can be found in their entirety below. Lines used in the movie are in bold.

    Delusion Angel

    Daydream delusion,
    limousine eyelash,
    oh, baby with your pretty face,
    drop a tear in my wineglass,
    look at those big eyes,
    see what you mean to me,
    sweet cakes and milkshakes,
    I am a delusioned angel,
    I am a fantasy parade,
    I want you to know what I think,
    dont want you to guess anymore,
    you have no idea where I came from,
    we have no idea where we're going,
    launched in life,
    like branches in the river,
    flowing downstream,
    caught in the current,
    I'll carry you, you'll carry me,
    that's how it could be,
    don't you know me?
    don't you know me by now?

    As I Walked Out One Evening

    As I walked out one evening,
    Walking down Bristol Street,
    The crowds upon the pavement
    Were fields of harvest wheat.

    And down by the brimming river
    I heard a lover sing
    Under an arch of the railway:
    'Love has no ending.

    'I'll love you, dear, I'll love you
    Till China and Africa meet,
    And the river jumps over the mountain
    And the salmon sing in the street,

    'I'll love you till the ocean
    Is folded and hung up to dry
    And the seven stars go squawking
    Like geese about the sky.

    'The years shall run like rabbits,
    For in my arms I hold
    The Flower of the Ages,
    And the first love of the world.'

    But all the clocks in the city
    Began to whirr and chime:
    'O let not Time deceive you,
    You cannot conquer Time.

    'In the burrows of the Nightmare
    Where Justice naked is,
    Time watches from the shadow
    And coughs when you would kiss.

    'In headaches and in worry
    Vaguely life leaks away,
    And Time will have his fancy
    To-morrow or to-day.

    'Into many a green valley
    Drifts the appalling snow;
    Time breaks the threaded dances
    And the diver's brilliant bow.

    'O plunge your hands in water,
    Plunge them in up to the wrist;
    Stare, stare in the basin
    And wonder what you've missed.

    'The glacier knocks in the cupboard,
    The desert sighs in the bed,
    And the crack in the tea-cup opens
    A lane to the land of the dead.

    'Where the beggars raffle the banknotes
    And the Giant is enchanting to Jack,
    And the Lily-white Boy is a Roarer,
    And Jill goes down on her back.

    'O look, look in the mirror?
    O look in your distress:
    Life remains a blessing
    Although you cannot bless.

    'O stand, stand at the window
    As the tears scald and start;
    You shall love your crooked neighbour
    With your crooked heart.'

    It was late, late in the evening,
    The lovers they were gone;
    The clocks had ceased their chiming,
    And the deep river ran on.

    Death of a Rock Star

    Death of a Rock Star is my first attempt at an ATC (Artist Trading Card). I used the theme Rock Stars from Think Monday, Think ATC.

    I may find myself stitching more around the flower as I think it could use a bit more highlighting.

    Working on this ATC has kept my mind off the fresh snow we received yesterday/ last night. It accumulated to another 4 inches over what we already had from last week. Can't wait for warmer/ longer days.

    Blue Moon & Gull

    Blue Moon & Gull is a mixed media/ collage on a blank 4x6 index card. I used the theme Ice Blue from Think Monday, Think ATC. The haiku is by Rensen.

    Th' reflected moon shall make
    A pillow for the bird that floats
    Asleep upon the lake.
