8 Poefusions:
I'm just finishing The Monster of Florence by Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi. It's the true story of their chronicling of serial murders in the hills above Florence, Italy, and the ineptitudes of the investigators. Interestingly, one of the chief investigators is the same man who has charged the American student on trial over there now for the murder of her roommate. If Preston and Spezi can be believed, and I think they can, this girl is probably being railroaded. Sad.
Just finished Jo Walton 'The King's Peace', which is the first in an alternative-history trilogy set in an easily recognisable post-Roman Britain (with names changed and 'real' magic added). Fantastic for pace, characterisation, and particularly for making the world it's set in feel completely real and solid. All this in a début novel! My only niggle is the vast number of characters which lost me a bit.
As for what to get into next... erm... such a huge choice. I picked up the Penguin Book of Animal Verse in a charity shop this week, which is great fun and may be taking some enjoyable minutes from my working time. ;0)
Brainpower Game Plan published by Prevention magazine. It's really a fun book to work through and it also has a lot of good advice how to improve our memory capabilities for the years to come.
Lust for Life, Im on an Irving Stone "kick" these days. LOL
I've just finished Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar. The first third is quite entertaining but then the main character becomes seriously depressed and spends the rest of the novel in mental hospitals. Very sobering to read about her treatment..... I wonder how much is autobiographical...
Oh, hon, I love to read, but haven't picked up one recently. Here's some I have read in the past yr or two that you might like:
SnowFlower and the Secret Fan
The Time Traveler's Wife
The Longest Trip Home
and I saw Crafty Green's post and would recommend Sylvia Plath's book, too.
I am reading 'Why We Run: A Natural History' by Bernd Heinrich...biologist, award-winning nature writer, and ultramarathoner Bernd Heinrich explores a new perspective on human evolution by examining the phenomenon of ultraendurance and makes surprising discoveries about the physical, spiritual -- and primal -- drive to win. At once lyrical and scientific, Why We Run shows Heinrich's signature blend of biology, anthropology, psychology, and philosophy, infused with his passion to discover how and why we can achieve superhuman abilities.
I will be reading Human, all too Human by Friedrich Nietzsche.
Good to have stumbled onto your space.
Aditya.
I'm reading Moby Dick. Call me crazy.
In poetry: Human Wishes, by Robert Haas.
Sorry I haven't been blogging much. I've been writing a term paper, but it's almost done.
