The Cross and the Switchblade
Today I finished reading The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. I'm pleased I didn't go see the movie before finishing the book. It would have ruined the experience I think. Now I can freely watch the movie and make my comparisons.
My next book of choice is called The Cross and the Switchblade by David Wilkerson. It's a true story about David Wilkerson, a country preacher, who goes to New York on God's calling. He founded Teen Challenge, an inner- city ministry that today maintains residential and crisis counseling centers around the globe.
I chose this book because I was given a copy while attending grade school at Porter Elementary. I lost the book before I could read it and even watched the film in Porter's gym. Now, years later, I find a fresh copy in my possession and look forward to reading about David's journey. Here's an excerpt from pgs. 11 and 12. The following may not be for all readers so proceed with caution.
"What's the matter with me!" I said aloud, impatiently brushing away a tear. I looked at the picture more carefully. The boys were all teenagers. They were members of a gang called the Dragons. Beneath their picture was the story of how they had gone into Highbridge Park in New York and brutally attacked and killed a fifteen-year-old polio victim named Michael Farmer. The seven boys stabbed Michael in the back seven times with their knives, then beat him over the head with garrison belts. They went away wiping blood through their hair, saying, "We messed him good."

Now this seems like a interesting one. The TTW- I had a hard time, with that one, but I liked it.
I always prefer to read the book first. It just seems the way to do it.
Hi-
I saw you post on Nature Notes, so came by. Pleased to discover another reader. I LOVED The Time Traveler's Wife. It was one I chose to listen to via CD and I was spellbound.
Pleased to meet you and hope you stop by.
Yeah, if i see a movie before reading a book, i generally get disappointed. Right now I'm reading the new Dan Brown Lost Symbol book. I like fast-paced historical fiction books.
looks awsome!!
will definitely have a look!
I read the cross and the switch blade many years ago. It is a real classic
So glad you are reading 'The Cross & the Switchblade'. I have a copy and read it many years ago. I remember it vividly (rather as I do 'The Hiding Place' by Corrie Ten Boom and the film of 'The Inn of the Sixth Happiness' about Gladys Aylward).
I remember seeing the 'Cross & the Switchblade' film in my teens: a powerful and challenging true story. Will be interested, Michelle, to hear how you rate the movie when you get to see it.
I loved reading "The Time Travelers Wife". Can't wait to see the movie.
Cheers!

I should read that - heck either of them. Thanks for the info. :)
I haven't read The Cross and the Switchblade, but it sounds as if I should. I think I've weighed in before, but I seldom like a movie as much as I do a book.
I don't find many movies live up to the book....Michelle
It reads like good writing, although the subject of gang violence is of concern to us all. I think TV has a lot to do with legitimizing violence, unfortunately.
Now you have reminded me of how long it's been since I've read a riveting work of fiction!
interesting
I enjoyed THE CROSS AND THE SWITCHBLADE - years ago - the book and the movie.
Actually met the author. Amazing ministry.
I haven't read that book, but it certainly seems intertesting. Like you, I prefer to read a book before seeing the film.
A friend gave me the audio book of 'The Time Traveler's Wife' when i was too ill to read, a few years ago (brilliant gift idea, btw). It was well acted and is a beautiful story. I don't like the idea of the film - the trailers make it look like just another love story with a twist... Be interested how you find it, hard upon reading the book.
Hi Michelle. The reason I am making contact with you is because I found that you were fan of the film The Cross and the Switchblade and I wanted you to be one of the first in the world to hear about my musical of the same name that I am pursuing a producer for right now. Feel free to check it out at http://www.thecrossandtheswitchblade.net and please drop me a line either on facebook or my blog. Please grab your free copy of my eBook 'Dust Off Your Dream' as well. God bless Peter
I remember hearing Nicky Cruz speak at a David Wilkerson program in Seattle in the early 70's. I read the book way back then.
