    Blue Heron

We were driving west on Orangeburg road yesterday when I spotted a blue heron in an open field. It stood perfectly still, unsolicited, with brisk October winds slogging across its back.  The sun a poultice on its wings. It carefully eyed my intrusion upon its playground as I walked closer- camera lens extended.

    Then...

It rinsed itself of my presence seeking solace in a copse of trees. Happy Monday~

Note: Please feel free to let me know if I identified said blue heron incorrectly.

I love your phrasing in this: "It rinsed itself of my presence..." You're poetic even in prose.

Damn, I have been trying to get a shot of one for several weeks, to go with a haiku. You got two!

Really, really lovely, Michelle. I don't know if I've ever seen a heron stand in a field before. There must have been water very close by. Great shots. The great blues are some of my most beloved birds.

I love the heron's solitariness. How happy it is to be alone!

Though I haven't seen a blue heron live, your picture post was nice. Oddly, it reminds me of crane that flew by my park when I was younger in high school. It just stood there and then took off similar to your picture. Thanks for bringing back memories.

Wow, that's so cool! I never catch birds - other than seagulls - in flight. Well done.

Hi Michelle, thanks for stopping by. I really enjoy moments like these when I come across a heron or one of the other big birds. Receently it was Edwina - you can meet her at my site.

One of my favorite birds. Great that you caught it in flight. Such wings. I love the heavy lift-off!

Great prose. Really sets me in the scene.
