    Landscape Drawing

I bought a book called The Art of Pencil Drawing by Gene Franks the other day to see if I could teach myself to draw. I chose a rather big project to start but, I finished it tonight. At least the end result wasn't to horrendous and I'm encouraged to keep trying.

For the curious at heart I've copied the original below.

    Merry Christmas Everyone~

    Hidden Gateway

Jacked up on sweet tea from dinner at DeSha's restaurant tonight I decided to draw Hidden Gateway from The Color Pencil Wheel Book by John Barber. I know my amateur attempt doesn't look completely like the picture but...

I am surprised at the resemblance. I will certainly revisit this drawing to fix the mistakes I know I made and maybe perfect it a bit during the process. Until then, I will try to get some sleep.

    Peppermint Bark Candy

Today I stood in my kitchen making peppermint bark candy for the first time. I'm making it for John's friends at work as an extra Christmas gift. Pictured below is my finished attempt before breaking it into pieces and serving it into Christmas decorated containers. For those who love to cook in their kitchens I have copied the recipe below.

    Materials:

12 oz. quality white chocolate, finely chopped
30 red-and-white-striped hard peppermint candies, coarsely crushed (about 6 ounces)
12 oz. bittersweet (not unsweetened) or semisweet chocolate, chopped
    1/2 cup whipping cream
    1 Teaspoon peppermint extract
    Measuring cup
    Rubber spatula
    Sharp knife
    Aluminum foil
    Cookie sheet
    Packaging: glass jar
    Packaging: ribbon, tag, ornament, etc.

Note: This recipe makes around 1-1/2 pounds.

    1. Line the cookie sheet with a 12" length of foil.
    2. Combine bittersweet/semisweet chocolate, whipping cream, and peppermint extract in a bowl set over saucepan of barely simmering water (figure A) -- do not allow bottom of bowl to touch water) until chocolate is melted and smooth. The chocolate will feel warm to touch. Remove from over water. Pour the chocolate onto the foil. Using the rubber spatula spread an even layer of chocolate over the foil.
    3. Sprinkle half of the crushed peppermints over the chocolate (figure B). Chill in the refrigerator until set, about 20 minutes.
    4. Remove the chocolate and peppermint from the refrigerator. Melt the white chocolate in a bowl set over saucepan of barely simmering water (do not allow bottom of bowl to touch water) until chocolate is melted and smooth. (The chocolate will feel warm to touch.) Remove from over water. Pour all of the white chocolate over the chilled chocolate and peppermints (figure C). Using the rubber spatula spread the white chocolate in even layer. Top with the remaining crushed peppermints. Refrigerate until very cold and firm, about 25 minutes.
    5. Once hardened, use your hands to break the bark into chunks (figure D). Allow bark to stand 15 minutes at room temperature before serving. (Note: This recipe can be made 2 weeks ahead and chilled in an airtight container.)
    6. For gift giving, package the peppermint bark in clean glass jars. Glue stick wrapping paper scraps to the metal lid. Attach a bow, ornament and a tag.

    Snow

We received our first snow of any significance starting around 3 am Tuesday morning. The snow continued to fall until it reached about 2 in. After charging my camera battery and cooking some peppermint bark candy I was able to snap this shot of the field in front of our house. It looks as though most of it is beginning to melt away. Hope everyone is having a nice holiday.

    Standpipe Ohio

The sleigh bells will be ringing bright and early tomorrow. My family and I will be pulling away from our driveway around 8:00 am to visit my aunt Barb and uncle Tim in Standpipe, OH. We can't wait.

Barb has planned to have food catered in by a good friend of hers who will have it there by the time we arrive. She's also planned a shopping trip for us girls. Afterwords, we plan to talk and play Yahtzee until it's time to leave.

I almost forgot. We plan to open presents too. Emma (Barb/ Tim's dog) will enjoy her gift very much. Here's why. She's been known to get into some trouble with a skunk... three to be exact. So we thought it would be a nice joke to get her a stuffed skunk toy for Christmas. At least with this skunk she won't have to get three different baths. Shh! Don't tell Emma what her surprise is.

Antlers & A Big Red Nose

    Rudolph the red nosed reindeer
    had a very shiny nose

And, if you ever saw it...
    you would laugh and say,
"I have to have one of those!"

I know my jingle is off a bit but you really will want one of these car ornaments. I received mine in the mail Monday (Dec. 8th). I looked out my window one day and saw someone driving to our neighbor's house with these reindeer antlers and a big red nose on their SUV and couldn't resist buying myself one. At least no one can say I'm not in the Christmas spirit.

    Cinnamon

The Christmas bug has bitten me this year. So, I decided to share some of my goings on here in Maysville. Saturday (Dec. 6th) I made my first batch of cinnamon candy to the correct cinnamon flavoring, redness and thickness. But, nothing could have prepared me for the burnt taste throughout each piece. Otherwise, it was really good.

Later that same morning we went to Florence, KY. We arrived hungry. Pulling into a Chipotle restaurant we ordered some burritos, tacos and chips with salsa. If you haven't had the opportunity to stop into one you must put this on your list of to dos. It has great, fast food, wonderful atmosphere and a good serving of whatever you ordered. After devouring our food we went to the mall for some Christmas shopping. All in all, we had a really nice day and managed to get most of our presents.

    Tiptoes

    Her balance begins on tiptoes.
Bare feet, hard floor dictate her prose.
    She wanders Mammaw's living room.
One foot, left foot, right- look at her
    Causing Papaw's blackbird a stir.
She pirouette's to her own tune,
    In unperfected time and style
She crosses her stage with a smile-
This growing, six year old, fleshplume.

My poem was written for 3ww and Tuesday Title (Fleshplumes) using the poetic form nove otto. The poem is based on a childhood memory while visiting my mammaw and papaw.
