    Terza Rima

Terza Rima consists of three line stanzas and a rhyme scheme of aba, bcb, cdc, etc. The form ends with a single line or couplet (two rhyming lines), rhyming with the previous tercet's middle line. You can also end the form with a tercet whose middle line rhymes with the first and third lines of the opening stanza, making the poem circular.

Here's an example from wikipedia and here's mine:

    She breathed death's familiar scent
    Somewhere between Heaven and sorrow
Entwined in what time had lent.

She knew his spirit was on borrow
When she saw his aura was daunted
No longer living a tranquil tomorrow.

    His last days were taunted
    Waiting for his final transition
    From her eyes, so haunted.

    Now, she stood her position
    In front of his coffin
Calling on God for his attention.

    had to have a cigarette
    dim to carsick dog

    chain reaction starts
    regurgitating mem'ry
    affordable laugh

3WW words are in bold. My haiku is a true story. It is about me and my then husband going for a cigarette run. We took our dog Blaze with us. She threw up in the car because he wouldn't stop anywhere I asked him to. I caught most of it in my hand while he comes to a dead halt in the middle of the road. He couldn't take the smell and started throwing up himself. All I could do was laugh and say, "Now! Was it worth going out for those cigarettes?" Thank you Bone for such fun words.

    Poefusion

    Poefusion #2

Quarters. I have been collecting the newly designed quarters since 1999. Each one has a different design representing the states. Today's challenge: use the design on the back of the quarter to write a poem/ story. You can use the quarter designed for your state or use your favorite design. Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska and Hawaii quarters haven't been issued yet so, you might want to pick a favorite for this challenge. Please leave your comments below. Hope to see you around.

For an extra challenge write a poem/ story using all the quarters that have been issued.

    a lone chimney

    with every step, love grows...

    She searched hidden geocache
    Along circuitous trails
Ceasing, only once, in front of
    A lone chimney.

    Beneath this erected structure
    Her unkempt, green eyes
    Surveyed a cold hearth,
    Harbored inside spindly trees.

    Fragments of sound, duple rhythm
    Played against her ear
    As she continued to search
    Undefiled earth.

    Turning dark, musky grains
    Under the stone structure
She found a clear, small Tupperware
    Containing a black box.

    Vintage letters scrawled
    Inside a leafs scheme
    Became her focus-
    Will You Marry Me?

Monday Mural will feature a picture/ artwork for you to lend your words (poem or story) each Monday. I want you to ask yourself what images are provoked here? What words would you use to define this picture? If you choose to write for Monday Mural please leave your comments below. Hope to see you around.

I hope everyone enjoys this week's Monday Mural. I personally took the photo with my new Sony DSC- W80 digital camera. My family and I went to Cummins Nature Preserve this evening to capture this beautiful, lone chimney. I will post another photo of my husband w/ Mateo, our Jack Russel, over at Shades of Mj if you would like to catch a glimpse of some of my family.

Today was a really good day. My family and I went to the movies, Wendy's, Wal- Mart and Cummins Nature Preserve.

The movie was really good. We went to see Beowulf. I highly recommend reading the book too. After eating and shopping we came home to grab the camera and headed out for Cummins Nature Preserve.

Cummins Nature Preserve is an area for hiking, biking and outdoor theater. It is a beautiful place. We went there today solely to take a picture of a lone chimney for Poefusion and Monday Mural.

    My eyes linger on
    Vintage remnants
    Once born against a
    Threadbare mountain.

    Refurbished land, splintered green
    An abandoned trestle
    Lies on sutured ground,
    Ingrained by parallel seams.

    Her aged black skin
    Perspiring beneath a creosote sun
    Is paused
    For a train never sounding
    Her intoned whistle.

    A sloping north hemisphere
    Bestowing icy Snowqualmie Falls,
    White spittle dredged my skin.

    In His Life

    In his life’s theater
    He searched answers
    Tested inside a malaria haze
    Years unturned
Like a leaf in still wind
    Waiting, yielding

    He heard his incalescent voice
    Gather to a pitch,
    Agraffe bright.

    He searched her face
    Amidst the crowd
    Releasing a tear
    For their stillborn child.

    church

    love falls on sacred
    ground weathered by untouched graves
    forgotten white church

John saw a bumper sticker yesterday that said love falls church. When he woke up this morning he said he wanted me to write him a haiku with those words. So, I chose to write about an abandoned white church. We found the church while riding our four wheeler in the hills. I wish I had a camera that day because it was a beautiful place.

    Writing Poetry

I was tagged by Christine over at Maria Christina blog to list at least four things you think a beginning poet should attend to and four mistakes you think a poet should avoid.

    Here is my attending list:

    1. Desire. First, you must want to write poetry.
    2. Read. Reading is very important because it keeps you educated. It also helps you to better understand the writings of others.
    3. Writing Routine. Develop a writing routine you can adhere to. There are different writing prompts here at Poefusion and other links to the far right of this page where you can fall into a good routine each week.
    4. Imagination. Bring your imagination to the page. A poem doesn't always have to be about nature, life's troubles, etc. It can be about whatever you make up.
    5. Explore. Take the time to explore different poetic forms/ writing styles to see which fits you best. What do you like, dislike most?

    Here is my mistakes list:

    1. Spelling/ Grammar. You can always have someone look over your poem for writing mistakes.
    2. And/ The. Take them out and use other words to express your thoughts. I find this one hard to do sometimes.
    3. Don't Force. Take a time out. Check back with your poem later to see if you want to finish or not.
    4. Getting the Big Head. When you think you are the only one who can write well you fail to see the other great writers out there. And, there are many who can write.

Since I am still sick I will only tag two others. Here they are:

    Accidental Novelist
    Fledgling Poet

    Found Poem

A found poem is simply words or phrases from other sources; such as, a newspaper, novel or several different poems. You then place all the words or phrases into your poem. It's important to remember, when writing a found poem, NOT to change any of the wording. Please remember to credit your source(s).

    Here's an example

    Early Bloom

    - The Ledger Independent, November 2, 2007

    a Bradford pear tree
    was in full BLOOM,
    led authorities to close
    interstate 75,

    sweeps leaves away
    over the whir
    of passing cars
    on that August morning.

My first attempt at a found poem. I was sick while attempting this. Hence the shortness. I might revisit this one when I am feeling much better. Or, I might attempt a new one later and see what comes out. At least, I like where this one was headed.

    No Salt Required

    She wears her best
    Victorian style dress
    Adorned with yellow satin shoes
And, a white bonnet her mama let her choose.

    She set out to play
In her Shirley Temple curls, none astray
When she happened upon the wood anemone
    Thinking she would find Jiminy.

Her tiny lips parted a whistle
    Amongst thorn and thistle
When bluebirds flitted across the land
    Nestling in her tiny hand.

This week's Monday Mural is a picture I have hanging in my house. I have enjoyed this picture since I was a child. My great aunt Mary gave this to me many years ago as a gift. The artist is unknown to me but, I felt this would be a good writing piece for everyone. I would like to thank the talented artist for this week's artwork.

    Into My Presence

    Weeping willow, you cry
    A thousand tepid tears
    Beneath crepuscular sky
    Until each plural formation
    Becomes parched and withered

    Your vagile limbs sway
Against a stitch of roused earth
    Breaking a fragrance that
    Settles into my presence.

    Rondeau

The Rondeau is a fixed form of fifteen lines with the first line being repeated in part or whole. It will have eight or ten syllables per line and a rhyme scheme of aabba, aabR, aabbaR. The R is the repeated refrain in each stanza of five, three and five lines.

    Here's an example

    mi esposo

mi esposo… you grew strong in my heart
always true, no division, from the start
you work hard to make my life full, secure
‘cause you never want our life obscure
    only our devotion should impart

to one another creating an art
where politeness is grown without depart
and you take my hand in yours to ensure
    mi esposo…

that you will always be taking a part
no matter where, how life has left its mark
you are always there when I am unsure
and have forgotten how to be mature
you guide me back without growing apart

    gypsy

    gold, sapphire, ruby
    glint from Llesenia’s
    glossy mask before she
    grazes upturned hair with
    gentle touch. Her folded
    green eyes dream of catching
    graceful butterfly wings.

    wandering tales foretold
    with her fortune read on
    wings of butterfly. She’s
    waiting for Pegasus,
    willing his arrival.
    wheel of caravan heard
    water is splashing, fresh.

    fretted laughter coming
    from traveling gypsies
    forced Llesenia come
    forth. She drank their water
    feeling an attachment,
    fetter, alongside her
    featured wrists and ankles.

    at Mt Helicon she
    abruptly woke, tired,
    alone. There she did hear
    all three gypsies gather
    along the Hippocrene.
    a Pegasus stood, lone,
    allowing her escape.

    Beauty Leaves

    An orchestra of shadow
Moon licked by character, wasp nest
And a sliver of orange is
    Reaching together into
    Tongues of landscape
    A wild form,
    Impeccable.
    You just have to trust,
    For some kinds,
    Beauty
    Leaves.

My poem was created for Danika over at the Accidental Novelist. She's given everyone a challenge. You are asked to rewrite bits of her poetry and use them in your own poem. Here are the words:

landscape is a form of character
reaching into leaves a wasp nest
licked together by an orchestra of
tongues wild and orange sliver for

    Mammaw's Front Porch

    I wear the scent
    Of inspissated fog
    And fluvial wind
    On my alabaster skin
    While sitting in
    A heavy, white,
    basket-weaved,
    Rocking chair on
    Mammaw's front porch.

    The deluge of rain
    Playing against the tin roof
Settles in the calm of my ears

    Fragmented pieces of earth
    Reposition itself into puddles
    On the front lawn.
